Back in 1999 I was making my first tentative explorations into the potential of the internet. I was sitting in a hotel room after delivering a day's training for the UK Ministry of Defence, pondering various domain names and getting nowhere. After my brain cells went on strike, I decided to go for a walk.
The suburban area I was staying in wasn't very inspiring, so in a rather desperate attempt to stimulate my mind I climbed an embankment and sat at the side of a motorway.
It was approaching dusk, and this particular stretch of road turned out to be a long, sweeping bend that, from my perspective, appeared to span the Earth from horizon to horizon. Against the backdrop of the setting sun this was a remarkable and impressive sight.
It came to me that the internet was something like this road, a highway that spanned our planet. For the first time I "got" the potential of the internet. I saw that here was a communication system that could traverse the globe in seconds, crossing borders and removing walls between nations, businesses, and people.
Inspired by this notion, back in my hotel room I began to play with permutations of words. Soon the word "Global" came to me. But in itself it had no particular meaning or significance. Again, my brain ground to a halt.
It was then that I glanced down at my bed and saw the cover of the novel I was reading. It was The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, a beautiful spiritual adventure story.
Ah, I thought, Global Alchemist!
But no, that didn't sound or feel quite right.
The name Global Alchemy came soon after. It came as I saw a vision of how audio, video, and written educational products could combine with the latest high-tech science in a powerful alchemical fusion.
I didn't know then exactly what form this new internet enterprise was going to take. But I had a vision of harnessing the internet to help bring inspiration and hope to humanity across our planet. And something inside me knew I must make it happen.
The site you are reading is the fourth incarnation of Global Alchemy. Bringing the vision into materialisation has been much more challenging than I could ever have imagined. I have often felt like an old dog struggling to learn a new trick as I slowly teach myself the skills of living in hyper-space.
But providence has moved to help make the dream into reality. Many, many people have contributed to this project. Some brought a single piece of advice or help at just the right time.
My web designer,Paul Masri (www.worldwithoutwalls.co.uk) has been with me from the beginning. Paul has the rare ability to put technical issues into language understandable by ordinary mortals like me. He has helped me slowly understand the fine art of staying sane while learning to use a computer and navigate the internet.
Recently I asked the universe for help with the enormous project Global Alchemy has become. And, with beautiful synchronicity, Georgia Whitehouse has come to help me with the Internet Publishing side of the business. And Jackie Cannon has taken responsibility for organising Global Alchemy Events. You can read more about them on Who Are We?
