Self-Publishing Consultancy

Leo's first book became a best-seller and his latest book is attracting accolades from spiritual teachers around the world. From his hard-won experience of conventional and self-publishing he offers guidance to people who want to create a book they can be proud of.

The idea to offer a self-publishing consultancy service grew naturally from the success of Break Out of Your Mind. It became obvious that Leo had amassed a wealth of skills and experience that would be valuable to anyone setting out to self-publish a book.

Publish a book as the best ever marketing tool and business card

A good book is the ultimate symbol of expertise and knowledge. Therefore, when developed correctly, a book can be the ultimate way to get new clients and build your reputation.

But most authors to not realise there is more than one way to make money with their book. To achieve real success as an author it is important to choose the way that works best for you.

Learn about the two key approaches to making money with a book - and why you need to know the difference (this is a free, downloadable pdf)

Our service

We take the sweat out of self-publishing by guiding you through the various stages of book production:

  • The actual writing - the creative process of getting your specialised knowledge out of your head and into the written word
  • Copy-editing - making sure your self-published book makes logical sense, the chapters are in the right order, the text is structured correctly, and so on...
  • Proof-reading - a last check to find those pesky typos, spelling mistakes, and grammatical boo-boos.
  • Front and back cover design - a book sells on the basis of it's cover so this stage is absolutely crucial
  • Typesetting - getting the text and graphics in print-ready format so they can be sent to a printers
  • Printing - the prices, quality, and level of service offered by printers can vary dramatically and it is important to choose the right one for your needs
  • Promotion - including creating your publicity material and website, marketing via Amazon, bookshops, talks, to your clients, at your workshops, radio interviews, and so on...

We work in partnership with a 20-year established supplier of pre-print services to the international book trade. This company produces books for multi-million pound publishers as well as for self-publishers. So you can be sure the quality of their work is of the highest standard.

Ok, I want to have a book to promote my business - but I am not a writer.

Nil problemo!

Many people would like to have a book to promote their professional services but don't know who to turn to or who to trust. The self-publishing field is a minefield for the unwary and it is only too easy to end up with a book that brands you and your business as "amateur".

We can organise for a professional writer to work with you to create a self-published book you will be proud of - and that will impress your clients and bring you more business.

Our role will be to oversee the work and make sure everything unfolds smoothly. There are so many aspects to creating a successful book and they all have to be done right, at the right time.

Copywriting

You will most likely want to sell your book to as many people as possible. Copywriting is the name given to writing that sells something - in this case your book - and is a prized skill.

There are some basic do's and don'ts that will help put you ahead of the pack when it comes to:

  • Promoting your book online and offline
  • Writing advertisements
  • Creating back cover blurb that sells
  • Weaving words on your website to show your book off in the best possible light
  • Pitching to literary agents and publishers

Promoting a book is never easy, so the words you use in your marketing literature are vital to your eventual success. Learning the skills of copywriting is no different to learning any other skill. If you can write and think, you can write good copy.

Note: We can help you create your own copy or introduce you to a professional copywriter who will do the work for you while you get on with running your business.

Promoting and marketing your self-published book

Writing and self-publishing a book is a major achievement you can be proud of. But getting it out into the world is the biggest challenge you are likely to face.

You will likely want to promote your self-published book to:

  • National and International publishers
  • Bookshops
  • Libraries
  • Clients and workshop participants
  • Audiences at your public talks
  • Amazon and other online booksellers
  • Specialised niche markets

Approaching individuals and organisations, either in person, via email, or phone can be a daunting prospect. Fortunately the confidence you need lives within you and you can learn to access it at will.

There are ways that work and ways that do not work when it comes to marketing and promoting your book. The advice from an experienced writer and publisher can save you vast amounts of wasted time and money.

Vetting your book contract

Once you have successfully self-published your book, you may choose to submit it to a mainstream publisher or literary agent. Your chances of getting a publishing contract increase exponentially when you can show them a "real" book, not just and A4 manuscript. The fact that you had the commitment, determination, and persistence to self-publish your book will mark you out from the herd.

it is vital to check your contract carefully. Leo will do this for you. He will also send it to the Society of Authors for scrutiny by experts in book contracts, something you cannot do as a member of the public.

Remember that one clause in a contract could add, or subtract, thousands to your royalties. So your investment in this service is absolutely essential if you are serious about making money from your writing.

Note: If your book is in the mind-body-spirit or ecology genres, Leo may offer to introduce you to his literary agent. This will happen by invitation only for clients with exceptional books and is not a fee-based service.

We are developing a range of niched, downloadable written and audio products. Once we have the systems up and running - and all the bugs sorted - we will be teaching others how to create a similar business.

Essentially, our business model is for people who want:

  • to create a home-publishing business
  • with minimal start-up costs
  • with no previous experience
  • which completely by-passes conventional internet marketing strategies.
  • that eliminates Google, social networking, and Search Engine Optimisation

If this interests you, let us know by sending us an email and we will let you know when the programme is up and running.

How much does all this cost?

Probably not as much as you may think. Digital technology has brought the cost of book production down dramatically in recent years.

You are almost sure to recoup your investment in self-publishing your book. Consider the following ways you could use your book to generate new income streams:

  • Sell copies of your book via bookshops, Amazon, clients, workshop participants, back-of-room at your talks
  • Gain new clients or customers through your heightened professional profile and the natural kudos a good book bestows on every author
  • Get more participants for your workshops and retreats through your increased professional visibility and marketing power
  • Accept invitations to give paid talks and sell your book afterwards
  • Sell articles to magazines - online and offline - because being the author of a good book automatically lifts you above all the other article writers
  • Generate publicity for your business and thus attract more customers or clients as a book is the best advertising there is
  • Sell your book to national or international publishers for a large advance payment. To give you an idea of how much this could be, when Leo sold the Dutch rights to Break Out of Your Mind, the advance alone paid for the production costs almost twice over.
